A standard brief is usually the easiest starting shape because its crotch width and rear coverage leave enough space for several functional layers without making the garment look very different from ordinary underwear. A bikini reduces side and waist coverage, while a hipster sits lower and uses wider side panels; high-waist briefs provide more abdominal coverage and more room for extended rear protection.

The reason for offering several shapes becomes clearer when menstrual volume is considered. NHS guidance states that periods commonly last 2–7 days and blood loss is roughly 20–90 mL, while medical references often place typical blood loss near 30 mL and regard more than 80 mL as abnormal. A light-flow bikini and an overnight high-waist brief therefore should not share an identical absorbent specification.

A private-label buyer should treat the outer silhouette and the absorbent gusset as two separate specifications. The same high-waist pattern can be built for moderate daytime use or much broader overnight coverage, depending on the internal structure.

The gusset normally combines several jobs rather than relying on one fabric. The skin-facing layer moves liquid away from the surface, an absorbent section stores fluid, a leak-resistant membrane limits transfer to the outer fabric, and the body fabric provides stretch and fit. Increasing the number of layers is not automatically better because extra thickness can slow drying and make the crotch less flexible.

Placement matters as much as thickness. NHS clinical guidance notes that around 90% of menstrual blood loss can occur during the first three days of a period, which creates very different use conditions across the same cycle. A brand can therefore offer a thinner product for lighter days and a longer, wider gusset for the first days without forcing one bulky construction across every SKU.

Private-label development can use repeat wash cycles to compare dimensional change, seam condition, membrane integrity, absorbency, and waistband recovery.

Seamless products create another set of trade-offs. Laser-cut or bonded leg openings can reduce visible lines under leggings and fitted dresses, but the absorbent panel still needs secure attachment; a poorly controlled bonded edge may feel stiff or begin separating after repeated laundering. A standard stitched brief is simpler to manufacture, while bonded construction usually requires closer control of adhesive, temperature, pressure, and fabric compatibility.

Active underwear adds movement to the specification. Nylon-elastane or polyester-elastane body fabrics are often used because they provide stretch and faster moisture movement than heavier cotton jersey, while the gusset must remain stable during running, gym work, cycling, or yoga. A wide elastic or knitted waistband can reduce garment movement, but excessive tension can create pressure around the waist.

Fabric selection also changes how the product feels outside the absorbent area. Cotton-rich jersey gives a familiar underwear feel; modal or lyocell blends can produce a softer hand and more fluid drape; microfiber supports thin, smooth silhouettes; recycled nylon or polyester may suit sports and seamless collections. Fiber percentages should be confirmed from supplier specifications rather than estimated from fabric names.

For products sold in the United States, the FTC Textile Fiber Rule generally requires covered textile products to disclose fiber names and their percentages by weight, the manufacturer or marketer identity, and the country of manufacture. Under the Textile Products Identification Act, fibers representing 5% or more of total fiber weight generally receive individual disclosure, subject to stated exceptions.

Those requirements make complicated multi-fabric designs worth reviewing before labels are printed. A lace side panel, cotton body, elastane component, and technical gusset can create a more complicated material specification than a simple cotton-elastane brief; trim and structural components may also be treated differently under applicable rules.

Product pages should distinguish garment composition from performance claims. “95% cotton” describes fiber content; it does not establish how much liquid a pair can retain, how fast liquid moves away from the skin, or how well the leak-resistant layer performs after repeated washing.

Absorbency descriptions therefore need their own test method. A garment that absorbs a stated volume of water in a bench test may behave differently with menstrual fluid because viscosity, application rate, body pressure, gusset shape, and distribution area affect performance. Medical literature also shows why one universal capacity figure is weak: a historical dataset of 476 women found mean menstrual blood loss around 30 mL per month, while roughly 10% lost more than 80 mL.

Private-label specifications are more useful when they record test liquid, applied volume, application rate, leakage endpoint, conditioning method, sample count, and whether garments were tested before and after washing. Comparing three samples of each size or construction is more informative than reporting one unusually strong specimen, although the final sampling plan should match the brand's quality-control system.

Size grading deserves similar attention. Scaling every measurement by the same percentage can move the gusset too far forward or backward as sizes increase, so waistband circumference, front rise, back rise, leg opening, crotch width, and gusset position should be checked separately. A brand selling XS–3XL should fit more than one middle size before approving the range.

Teen designs may need another pattern block rather than a reduced adult pattern. Menstrual cycles commonly become closer to adult patterns over time; one medical review reports that by the third year after menarche, 60–80% of adolescents have cycles of 21–34 days. For a teen line, moderate-flow briefs, school-friendly hipsters, and higher-coverage overnight styles can cover different parts of the cycle without requiring fashion-heavy construction.

Postpartum-oriented products use some of the same high-coverage shapes but need separate positioning. Softer waist pressure, greater stretch, wider crotch coverage, and flat seams can make the garment more comfortable, while absorbency claims should match the intended use rather than assuming ordinary menstrual and postpartum needs are interchangeable.

Adaptive underwear changes the dressing method itself. Side snaps, hook-and-loop openings, or other accessible fastenings can help users who find pull-on garments difficult, but closures must be placed away from high-friction areas and tested for repeated opening, washing, and skin contact. A side-opening brief also needs enough structure to keep the gusset correctly positioned after fastening.

Fashion-oriented lines can use lace, mesh, scalloped edges, contrast binding, printed waistbands, or seasonal colors without altering the entire absorbent system. Keeping one approved gusset construction across several external designs can reduce redevelopment work, provided each silhouette still gives the gusset enough width and stable attachment.

SKU planning becomes easier when every style has a different wearing role rather than a different name. A four-style first range could use a moderate-flow hipster for daytime wear, a high-waist heavy-flow brief, a low-profile seamless bikini, and an extended-coverage overnight boyshort; additional colors can then be added without creating four nearly identical technical products.

MOQ discussions should separate style, color, size, waistband, and fabric variables because each change can create another production setup. Custom jacquard elastic, special dye colors, printed body fabrics, or unique membrane laminations may have different minimum quantities from standard stock materials, so approving 8 colors before confirming component minimums can create excess inventory.

Wash instructions also belong in development rather than being written after production. The FTC Care Labeling Rule, 16 CFR Part 423, requires care information for covered textile wearing apparel in the U.S., and the rule has been effective in its amended form since September 1, 2000. Wash temperature, tumble-drying limits, bleaching instructions, and line-drying recommendations should match validated garment performance.

Packaging claims should use the same discipline. Statements such as “heavy flow,” “overnight,” “odor control,” “antibacterial,” “PFAS-free,” or comparisons with a stated number of tampons require suitable support; a supplier's generic material brochure does not automatically establish performance for the finished garment after cutting, lamination, sewing, bonding, and laundering.

Before bulk ordering, a technical file can therefore record the approved pattern, graded measurements, fabric composition, GSM where relevant, stretch and recovery requirements, gusset dimensions, layer order, seam construction, waistband specification, color reference, wash method, test results, label artwork, and packaging copy. A well-separated brief, seamless, heavy-flow, and overnight range gives buyers more usable choice than many silhouettes sharing the same construction.
